PRESS RELEASE
According to CELA (Clean Energy Latin America) mapping, data centers closed 11 deals for long-term energy supply from solar and wind sources in the last three years
November 2024 – Long-term contracts in the free renewable energy market to supply data centers in Brazil total 330 MW average (average MW) in the last three years, in an estimated transaction amount of around USD 1.3 billion. This is what a recent mapping by CELA (Clean Energy Latin America) reveals, a company specialized in financial advisory and strategic consultancy for companies and investors in the renewable energy sector in Brazil and around the world.
CELA’s unprecedented mapping, based on analyzes of business carried out between renewable generators and data centers between 2021 and 2024, reveals a total of 11 long-term contracts signed, seven structured as energy self-production model and four more structured as regular PPAs (Power Purchase Agreement), signed between consumers and generators of renewable energy that sell in the Free Contracting Environment (ACL), also called the free energy market.
“This is a very significant volume of long-term contracts with data centers in Brazil, when considering the short period of time of of three years, for a sector that is beginning to emerge in the country as a relevant demander for clean energy, competitive and renewable”, assesses Camila Ramos, CEO of CELA. “Brazil is today an important hub for the development of the renewables market for data centers and new artificial intelligence and green hydrogen technologies, given the high competitiveness and availability of solar and wind sources compared to the global market”, she adds.
CELA itself has worked intensively with data centers on energy solution projects, including the contracting of renewable energy, all using the self-production model. And the company’s perspective is to serve an even greater number next year, including international players looking to set up shop and expand operations in Brazil.
Beyond data centers
At the beginning of the year, CELA structured a mapping of the total number of long contracts in the free energy market in the 2023 calendar year, in a total of 23 deals closed between generators and large consumers from various sectors. These transactions are equivalent to 969 MW average contracted, an increase of 63% compared to the previous year, when 594 MW average were recorded.
Since the first edition of the CELA report in 2017, 140 long-term wind and solar PPAs have been mapped in the ACL, representing an installed capacity of 14.3 gigawatts (GW). The accumulated amount of these contracts is equivalent to 4,147 average MW, of which 2,431 average MW are from solar energy and another 1,717 average MW from wind energy.
